Around Second Ward
There are affordable single-family homes on the east side of Second Ward—along Lockwood Drive and Navigation Boulevard—many of which were built in the mid-20th century. This area has a large concentration of many families who have lived there for generations. On the west side of the neighborhood, closer to downtown, recently constructed luxury townhomes and subdivisions tend to be more expensive.
Second Ward’s diverse community naturally contributes to the neighborhood’s culinary scene. This is the home of one of the city’s most popular local chain restaurants, Ninfa’s Original on Navigation. Navigation Boulevard also has unassuming taquerias and nearby Sampson Street is great when you’re in the mood for some old-fashioned burgers.
Great views of the downtown skyline. You will also see many historical places that relate the ward’s multicultural past, such as Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, which was the first Mexican-American church in Houston. You will see the contrast between the west and east ends of Second Ward just by driving down Navigation Boulevard. The dichotomy of historical and modern is quintessential Houston.
Second Ward has a vibrant nightlife scene thanks to trendy bars and lounges on the west side. Its proximity to downtown Houston naturally attracts young locals, and eccentric dive bars are the specialty in the Second Ward. Craft beer, delicious hot dogs, and beer gardens with picnic tables give the bars here a backyard, house party vibe.
Locals like to take their kids or go on a jog at Tony Marron Park on the north side of Second Ward. It has playgrounds, walking trails, and a softball field. You can also play a pick-up game at the basketball courts in Settegast Park. Downtown is just a few blocks away, which has many cultural events every month and entertainment centers.
