Within the past decade, new townhome developments have cropped up from the once industrial landscape. Most of these residences are free-standing townhome communities featuring gated entrances; few original bungalows and cottages remain. Architecture styles range from Italian villas to Victorians accented by terraces and wrought-iron balconies providing an alfresco escape. Homes within Shady Acres are also spread throughout the area rather than condensed in one part of the neighborhood.
Shady Acres’ restaurant scene spans cuisines, including Italian, Mexican, and German fare. The majority of this neighborhood’s casual dining and quick-bite spots are located along 19th and 20th streets. Restaurants with patios are easy to come by, and you won’t have to look far for a sports bar to enjoy a burger while watching your favorite team. For upscale eats, a short drive will take you to Houston Heights with some of the highest-rated restaurants in the city.
Shady Acres is mostly residential, so many of the streets are lined with newly built townhouse communities that evoke a suburban feel with the occasional bungalow. The majority of the popular hangouts are located on and around 19th and 20th streets where residents can be seen hanging out on the many restaurant patios. Families and pets are common in this neighborhood due to its parks and dog-friendly businesses.
Shady Acres boasts a variety of nightlife options for residents. Go bar hopping against the industrial backdrop of 18th, 19th, and 20th streets where Lyfts and Ubers are a common sight on weekend nights. Take a taproom tour at Eureka Heights Brewing Company, named for the nearby fault line that was home to the Eureka oil field in the 1930s; or check out the skyscape art installation on display every Friday night at the Live Oaks Meeting House.
Your Sunday doesn’t have to be a lazy one is Shady Acres. Runners and cyclists make use of the White Oak Bayou Greenway Trail, which can take you into Downtown Houston. Wright-Bembry park is an ideal Sunday destination with its playground, tennis courts, and greenspace for a picnic. If you prefer to relax on your Sunday, pick up a book at one of the two Little Free Library locations in Shady Acres and then head to a nearby cafe for some quiet reading time.
Easy access to Houston’s major freeways, including I-610 on the neighborhood’s northern border that connects to I-45 and I-10, gets commuters into the downtown area in about 15 minutes. While some amenities are within walking distance, most errands require a car. There are bus stops located on the border of the neighborhood that can take you into Downtown Houston in about 40 minutes to an hour. For those who prefer to travel via bike, the White Oak Bayou Greenway Trail travels south into the Heights Hike and Bike Trail, which will lead you to Downtown Houston in about 50 minutes.
