Around South Side
The South Side is an expansive and residential section of San Antonio. This means there are a lot of single-family residences available. Most of the homes are older, one-story builds, but many have plenty of land and offer great options for front and back yards. The homes range in price, but the area is definitely less expensive than some of the more affluent pockets surrounding it.
The South Side offers some of the best Mexican food in the city. That said, barbecue joints are also a big part of the South Side, and you will need to bring your appetite to many of the restaurants in the neighborhood. Closer to the schools and military base, there are traditional American restaurants and fast-food favorites. Customized food trucks can also be found parked in the area, ready to share their mash up options and hometown favorites right on the side of the road.
Being a residential area, you are more likely to see families and people out and about in the South Side. This is especially true the closer you get to some of the main hubs. The Lackland Air Force Base is located in the South Side, so many military families can be found out at some of the residential areas surrounding the base. The South Side is also home to two major universities, so expect to see student activity pick up the closer you get to the campuses.
There is plenty to get up to on a Friday night when you're in South Side. If you're a fan of sports bars or wine dives, you'll find tons of options to satisfy that Friday feeling. The South Side is close to the Blue Star District, where you will find plenty of art galleries to visit on a great Friday. You'll also find a great group of people on the First Friday of every month at the Blue Star First Friday event. Street vendors, vintage stores, and art galleries open their doors to residents and visitors alike for a great community night once a month. If you're looking for some scary fun, you may want to check out the "haunted" ghost tracks. This urban legend says that if you park your car on some abandoned train tracks in the South Side, ghostly hands will push your car over them.
The South Side is a great residential area, so Sunday is a wonderful time to do some shopping. Whether you're looking for vintage finds or hitting up the grocery store for the week, you'll find a little bit of everything in the area. The San Antonio River, which can provide some Sunday fun, runs through this neighborhood. Riverside Golf Course is another great options for some weekend fun before the work week picks back up again.
