Around Southside Park

Single-family homes are few in number and can be found along Chicago, Miller, and Baltimore Avenues in the northwestern corner of the neighborhood. There’s also a townhome development in the northern half along Youngblood Street. The southern half has a plethora of small office buildings, light industry, retail, and the Charlotte Area Transit operations hub.

Southside Park’s price range is about the same as other South End neighborhoods. The newer townhomes command a slightly higher price than most others in the area largely due to their convenient location near the New Bern train station.

Southside Park is limited when it comes to places to eat. There are a number of brewpubs that have great food menus. Some invite food trucks to drop by during peak hours. The good news is that locals don’t have to go far to find something to eat. A number of eateries ranging from fast food to upscale are just a few minutes away on South and East Boulevard. Check out Living Kitchen for organic food, espresso, and smoothies. For a nice evening out on a patio with friends and comfort food, try 300 East.

Near the train station, you’ll see mostly modern apartment buildings and townhomes and commuters heading out to work. Moving west from there, the neighborhood feels more suburban with a lot more trees and open spaces, especially near Southside Homes and Davis Middle School. On the south side, the industrial and commercial buildings are on the small side, modern and clean, so they don’t overwhelm the neighborhood.

The aforementioned brewpubs are Southside Park’s nightlife. Some will have live entertainment or events scheduled for the weekends. Luckily, there’s a few things to do on a Friday night in nearby neighborhoods. Bowling and movies are close by on South Boulevard. Taking a short drive or train ride north towards Uptown, there’s a lot more to choose from. The Spectrum Center hosts big-name musical acts and shows throughout the year. The Charlotte Knights baseball team’s home schedule includes Friday night games with fireworks. The Blumenthal Performing Arts Center features Broadway musicals, stage plays, and more year-round.

Start off the day at Owen’s Bagel for a serious breakfast bagel and coffee while you make your plans. For an active Sunday, there’s always Southside Park’s namesake park. It has a playground, basketball courts, soccer fields, and plenty of greenspace. Its paved paths are long enough for walkers and joggers to use for exercise. Golfers have several nice courses in nearby neighborhoods to choose from. During football season, the Carolina Panthers are right down the road at Bank Of America Stadium. For a quieter Sunday, head Uptown to spend the day at any of the splendid museums or feed the ducks and people-watch at Marshall Park.

The Lynx Blue Line is the Charlotte Area Transit System’s light rail system that connects the South End to downtown and as far north as the UNC main campus. It is very convenient to use and is a big reason why so many people who work in Uptown choose to live nearby. There’s also a number of bus lines that go down Remount Street and South Boulevard, making shorter trips for commuters pretty easy. Walkability is better for those who live closer to South Boulevard, as the train station, grocery shopping, and errands can be reached by way of a short walk. Those living closer to the park likely rely on their cars for most day-to-day errands. Access to I-77 is nearby at either Clanton Road or Remount Road.
