Around Springfield-Belmont
The neighborhood offers a combination of single-family homes, townhouses, and apartments in a number of low-rise properties due to its proximity to government offices and the city’s major university systems. However, the northeast section of the neighborhood is seeing a heightened interest due to major development surrounding the Teacher’s Village complex, a mixed-use development that is anchored by several new charter schools, housing, and retail shoppes.
Prices points for may start to come down the further south and west you travel as the distance increases from downtown. However, demand is increasing in certain areas due to the relatively new shopping center on South Orange Avenue and rapid retail expansion in and around Teacher’s Village.
Local restaurants, ranging from soul food to Caribbean cuisine and popular fast food and casual dining chains are widely available along the major commercial areas along major north-south corridors on Bergen Street and Irving Turner Boulevard, as well as Springfield Avenue, which connects the southwest area of Newark directly to the heart of downtown.
The neighborhood is a combination of independent businesses and quiet residential areas, tucked away from the main commercial sectors in downtown. Some of the city’s oldest landmark sites, including the old Krueger-Scott mansion, originally built in 1899, are located here. Nat Turner Park, a nine-acre city owned site, provides a local football field, track, and swimming pool. The eight-acre Jesse Allen Park offers athletic fields, basketball, and skateboarding facilities.
Numerous local bars and nightclubs cater to both students and attendees of nearby colleges and universities. In addition, NBA icon and son of Newark Shaquille O’Neal helped transform parts of the community by co-developing the Cityplex 12 movie theater, which offers stadium seating.
Take the family to Nat Turner Park or Jesse Allen park, or take a short drive or bus ride over to Weequahic Park, located further south in the Weequahic neighborhood. Springfield-Belmont is minutes away from a wide range of restaurants, art galleries, cafes, and other venues in both Lincoln Park and University Heights.
Frequent bus service is available to residents of Springfield-Belmont, offering connections to Broad and Market streets in downtown, where connecting bus service is available or Newark Penn Station. The Newark Light Rail stops at Norfolk Street and Military Park are minutes away for many residents.
