Settled mostly by German and French immigrants in the 1840s, the area was then known as Gibbs, Texas, up until 1890, when the name was changed to Coppell. Although not officially incorporated until 1955, Coppell was an important stop on The Cotton Belt Railroad, which added a stop in Coppell in 1889. The opening of DFW Airport in 1974 initiated a transition from the small-town farming community to the suburban city it is now. Coppell is known today for its beautiful arts center, its commitment to sustainability, and Old Town Coppell, the historic part of town.

Transportation
Located near I-35 East and I-635, Coppell is nearly equidistant from the downtown areas of Dallas and Fort Worth, both of which are around 30 miles away. The Amtrak Texas Eagle train stops in both Dallas and Fort Worth, allowing residents of Coppell an option for getting to Los Angeles or Chicago other than driving or flying. The Dallas Area Rapid Transit system has plans to open a Cotton Belt Rail Line which will connect seven northern suburban cities to DFW Airport, including Coppell, and of course, the airport itself is only a 4-mile drive from the heart of Coppell.
Schools
Coppell is served by the Coppell Independent School District, which is comprised of 10 elementary schools, three middle schools, and two high schools. There are also a host of private schools to choose from, and the North Campus of North Lake College is within the city of Coppell itself, while the Metroplex area offers many other higher education options.
Attractions
The shores of Grapevine Lake are mere minutes from Coppell, providing residents with plenty of outdoor recreation options during the warmer months. The Coppell Farmers Market, open year-round, is a great place to find locally-grown, sustainably-sourced fruits and vegetables, as well as browse the offerings of a number of vendors selling everything from candles to local honey to Texas olive oil. The Twisted Root Burger Company is a popular local eatery among locals, as is Frost Cupcakery and Hard Eight BBQ.
