Around Upper West Side
The Upper West Side is one of the greenest neighborhoods in all of Manhattan. Rowhouses, midrises, and the occasional highrise dot the stretch between 72nd Street to 110th Street. The farther uptown you head, the quieter the neighborhood seems to become, and the closer you venture toward Central Park, the more coveted the location becomes. Accessibility to Amsterdam Avenue makes taking the train or running errands a breeze.
Amsterdam Avenue, all the way from Hell’s Kitchen to Harlem, promises plenty of restaurants for dinner at a counter or multiple courses. Locals love their institutions—Zabar’s, Cafe Luxembourg, recently, The Ribbon. Lunch time is the perfect excuse to pick up a sandwich from Old John’s Luncheonette, or one of the neighborhood's many hidden gems, and take a walk through the park. Like the location itself, restaurants here are usually classic, timeless, and certainly not scene-y.
Neo Gothic and Art Deco residential buildings fill the tree-lined streets of the neighborhood. Tourists usually stick to Columbus Circle, but can sometimes venture into areas around Lincoln Center. The overall feeling is clean and quiet, often cleared out for summer weekends and holidays, but lively after work during the week. People from all walks of life and established New Yorkers alike call the neighborhood home.
After a commute back uptown on a Friday, there’s nothing better than kicking the weekend off with a film at Lincoln Center. The Beacon Theater is next door and an ideal venue to see a show or touring musician. Stop by neighborhood institutions like Blondie’s or The Dead Poet for a nightcap.
The day has to start with a stop at the busting Greenmarket on 77th Street. Vendors from surrounding farmland in New York and New Jersey offer the freshest produce, meats, and eggs in the city. You can enjoy a light lunch and a beer at Jacob’s Pickles before a matinee at The Metropolitan Opera. Afterwards, a post-opera Levain cookie and stroll through Riverside Park or Amsterdam Avenue are the perfect way to kill time before dinner at the beloved Sushi Of Gari.
The trusted 1/2/3 line, running down the western side of Manhattan and into Brooklyn, is the artery of the Upper West Side. The M79 crosstown bus between the Upper East and Upper West sides is also crucial. Most of the neighborhood is, at the furthest, four blocks from Central Park. When it’s not rush hour, slipping onto the West Side Highway allows for an easy escape from the city for the weekend.
