Around Utopia
The quiet, tree-lined streets of Utopia all lean against the Long Island Expressway. The further from the busy highway homes are, the quieter and more tree-lined the streets feel. The eastern side of the neighborhood, closer to Fresh Meadows, is more desirable because of its closeness to Cunningham Park. The single-family homes that generally populate the neighborhood are almost always in high demand. There aren’t high rises or lots of apartment-style housing options in Utopia.
Since it’s such a small area, dining in Utopia isn’t abundant in options. There are a few restaurants situated on Union Turnpike offering culinary options like Japanese and Italian fare. Luckily, Queens has some of the best food in all of New York City, so traveling to nearby neighborhoods like Flushing or Astoria makes it easy to fulfill any food cravings.
While Utopia’s boundaries are often debated, there’s a clear sense that it sits between Fresh Meadows and Kew Gardens. Both are residential areas on the higher end of housing styles. While single-family homes dominate the housing market, there are more apartment building options than in surrounding areas. Homes range in size as well as lot size—some complete with backyards and attached garages, others on the smaller side with less space and privacy between residences.
During the summertime, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park is a hotspot for Friday night activities. There’s usually some kind of live entertainment or picnic setup happening after work. Movies are shown some summer evenings, baseball games are always going on, and the park is generally abuzz. Head there after dinner at Utopia’s own Union Bistro, a high-end spot with a formal feel. Take the Q88 directly to the park after your meal.
There’s something serene about a Sunday in Utopia. Residents enjoy local coffee spots like CJ’s Cafe for breakfast. Bombay Theater is a great place to check out special screenings for a laid-back afternoon. Locals can also explore Kissena Park for a round of golf.
Commuting by the Q30/Q31 bus to the Long Island Railroad is a popular option for those getting from Utopia to Penn Station. The trip takes about an hour. Owning a car is quite popular in the area, which puts the commute at 40 minutes. Local buses travel frequently, which makes getting around Queens easy. There isn’t a subway stop nearby, which greatly impacts accessibility.
