Around Wedgwood
When Albert Balch and his team developed Wedgwood, they envisioned quaint Cape Cod-style homes set back on large lots. Originally the 500-home development was geared towards WWII defense workers then later returning soldiers. As a result of Balch’s planning, most homes were built on beautiful tree-lined streets that feature an abundance of firs and elms with lush lawns, making it a picturesque setting. As most of the area’s restaurants and shops are located on 35th Avenue NE and Lake City Way NE, living closer to the main thoroughfare makes the area very walkable.
Wedgwood Ale House’s motto is “same ridiculous management since 1992.” Snark aside, this family and dog-friendly neighborhood staple serves homey pub fare like fish and chips and the local favorite—bacon cheeseburgers. Another long-time neighborhood restaurant, Wedgwood Broiler also has a kid’s menu but is really known for their prime rib dinners and London broil. Adults can enjoy classic mixed drinks in their retro 1960’s style cocktail lounge. Another neighborhood staple is Grateful Bread, which has been serving its famous homemade bagels and piled-high sandwiches since 1996.
The charming commercial district on 35th Avenue NE is the closest thing Seattle has to a vintage main street. For a piece of really ancient history, check out Big Rock. This landmark of the neighborhood is a 20-foot tall glacial erratic boulder, which sits in a field at the corner of 28th Avenue NE and NE 72nd Street. It is believed to be a cast-off from the last ice age.
While Wedgwood isn’t known for its vibrant nightlife, the neighborhood is home to Fiddler’s Inn. For over 20 years, this local pub has been a fun laid-back spot to kick off the weekend thanks to its casual vibe, pizzas, barbeque specials, and variety brews on tap. Their dog-friendly outdoor beer garden is a great spot to unwind on warmer evenings as well. For a rocking good time, head to the University District about three miles away. The hopping college town has a ton of eateries, bars, clubs, and concert venues to enjoy on a Friday night.
Grab brunch at The van Gogh Coffee House, which has been serving their delicious Zoka coffee and grilled paninis since 2006. Grand Central Bakery is another popular spot for good coffee and hearty breakfast sandwiches. Take the kids to Dahl Playfield on 25th Avenue NE and revel at the rock sculptures while they climb the jungle gym or practice their high jumps on the skateboard ramp. On a summer day, visit the wading pool to dip your feet and cool off. Cap the day off with a trip to Top Pot Doughnuts for decadent rings made from a secret 1920s recipe.
Wedgwood is one of the more walkable and bike-friendly areas of Seattle thanks to the neighborhood's wide streets. There are also a few public transit options such as the King County Metro Transit bus line 522 that takes passengers into Downtown Seattle. From there, riders can transfer to a number of buses to go farther south. The 65 bus also runs south to Downtown as well as north to the U-District. The new South Link Transit Station on Roosevelt makes getting to Sea-Tac Airport a breeze.
