Around West Farms
While most residents would prefer living on the Bronx Park side of the neighborhood over the Cross Bronx Expressway side, there are benefits to both areas. The southern side is full of new developments where there were decrepit lots or dilapidated buildings. Homes near the park are closer to the zoo, which can be delightful for families with children. This side of West Farms is filled with older and taller buildings. Busy highways border the other two sides of the neighborhood, which ultimately leads to a more desirable middle area.
Most dining options are along West Tremont Avenue and East 180th Street. A variety of cuisines are represented, in small storefronts and sprawling banquet halls. Locally owned spots stand next to chains, making for a melting pot of culinary options. Local favorites include El Nuevo Valle, a restaurant heralded for its Dominican fare and Roy’s Restaurant and Bar, a Latin American establishment offering steaks and pastas.
West Farms, especially for the Bronx, is a very quiet neighborhood. The Bronx River slinks through the area, often unnoticed, except for areas where verdant stretches are planted with magnolias and Japanese maples. There are few formal, sit-down dining restaurants. Commerce is constricted to the far sides of West Farms, leaving a largely residential middle where families build homes for generations to come.
Considering the tranquility of West Farms, a lively Friday night is best found in neighboring Fordham Heights. Head to a formal dinner or take the subway into Manhattan for a night of jazz in Harlem. If you’re intent on keeping things local, get some take-out from Pizza Italia and enjoy a picnic in Bronx Park. The Bronx River flows along the eastern side of the neighborhood, making it an ideal spot for a romantic evening.
Sunday in West Farms starts with Caro Bakery and Coffee Shop. Grab a coffee and something to eat for enough energy for a long walk in Bronx Park. If you’re really in it for the long haul, walk to the New York Botanical Gardens for a day of relaxation amid beautiful flora and fauna.
There’s only one subway stop in West Farms, but luckily, it’s home to the 2 and 5 trains. The only issue is that the 5 train is known to skip the station, even during rush hour. The commute to Grand Central Station via train, assuming it's running, is 35 minutes. Traveling by car is a fairly popular option for the neighborhood, with a 25-minute drive to Grand Central Station.
