Even though we don't live in the MPS school district, we are one of many parents who commute to Forest Home daily to ensure that our children get an above-standard bilingual education. It is very unfortunate that the state does not include bilingual classrooms scores in all areas and all grades as this does not allow for a full picture of what the school is achieving and has to offer. The bilingual teachers are spectacular. They are engaging with the students and the families. They are tuned into the needs of each individual child and tailor their styles to ensure that each child succeeds. They are communicative with the parents which allows for teamwork in getting the results we all want - student success in all areas... academics, social, etc.
For many years, there was a mass exodus of teachers because of the principal, Sarah Marquez. Teachers even took out law suits against MPS because of her. This woman accused and belittled teachers and staff until they left. This caused a lot of instability because of high turnover. The principal has finally leftbut the damage of her long reign will take a long time for the school to recover. This is what happens when MPS looks at a person's race instead of their credentials.
Forest Home is a great neighborhood school in the city of Milwaukee. We have three children currently attending Forest Home and they all love it. The oldest who is now in 4th grade has been at the school since K4 and she is currently advanced in every subject (I feel it is important to mention that we enrolled her in the school with Spanish as her first language and now she is fluent). Our youngest will be moving to 1st grade next year and I am fascinated with the growth he has made since K4. We make all of this possible by working with all of their teachers to ensure the kids are on the right track to academic success.
