Downtown Elgin is known at the city’s hub of activity. Summer brings farmers markets, a Cinco de Mayo celebration, and a pub crawl, and the fun doesn’t stop when the weather cools down thanks to the Nightmare on Chicago Street zombie-fest and the Winter Wonderland. The downtown also holds some remarkable amenities for the community to enjoy, such as the scenic river walk and an impressive library with rotating exhibits.

Downtown Elgin includes two Metra train stations offering convenient access to nearby suburbs and Chicago. Several main roads surround the downtown, including I-90 to the north, so drivers are in a great spot to begin any trip. O’Hare International Airport is only about a 30-minute drive away.
There are a number of excellent schools in the city of Elgin. For public education, the city is served by four school districts which encompass numerous primary and middle schools, as well as two high schools. The two district high schools for this area are Elgin High School and Larkin High School. The downtown area also has several private schools including the Elgin Academy, St. John's Lutheran School, and St. Joseph School. Elgin is home to several colleges as well, including Judson University and Elgin Community College.
One of the most popular attractions in Downtown Elgin is the Grand Victoria Riverboat Casino, which offers live music and entertainment to the citizens and visitors from all over the state. Elgin is also home to numerous music and performing groups, including the Elgin Symphony Orchestra and the Janus Theatre Company. The Elgin Community College and Hemmens Cultural Center both host many productions every month, ranging in price and type of performance, from dance companies, to choruses, to widely known performers.
