The population tends to be more college-aged compared to the southern parts of El Cerrito. Few apartments are in this area and they are mostly located on Montezuma Road and closer to El Cajon Boulevard. Condominiums and a large student-housing complex are located along Collwood Boulevard. There are also two facilities designated for seniors, one on College Avenue and one on 54th street.
El Cerrito has few restaurants within its boundaries, but just outside the area there are a variety of choices. Inside the El Cerrito, there is a cozy coffee shop, a Vietnamese restaurant and a take-out pizza shop. Just outside the area, there are several sandwich and burger shops, a Hawaiian barbecue, a tea shop, a yogurt shop, taco shops and at least one or two major coffee chain stores. Most of these places are located around El Cajon Boulevard, Montezuma Road and College Avenue. The university also has several fast-food options.
People exercising, walking their dogs or hurrying off to work or school. Parents may be seen walking their kids to the local elementary school. On weekends, you may see people getting together with their friends and packing up their vehicle for a day at the beach or up in the mountains. Due to the location of San Diego State the neighborhood will be home to college students for most of the year.
Besides visiting with friends, many people head out to the university to see a concert or sports event. Some people may choose to spend Friday night playing cards at the casino on El Cajon Boulevard. You may see several fraternity and sorority members walking down Montezuma Road to attend their respective Friday night events. The rest of El Cerrito's traditional nightlife is more focused on college-aged bars and clubs.
Outdoors lovers will love going out for a walk or bike ride or for a hike on a lesser-known trail between Baja Drive and Adams avenue. Watching Sunday football is very popular and you can hear the cheers as you walk through the streets. Many people spend the weekend catching up on household chores or working on their vehicles.
