About Kensington

Located on the easternmost portion of San Diego's vibrant "Mid-City" region, Kensington is a well-established and upscale historic neighborhood that primarily caters to local San Diegans. In fact, most people from outside the greater San Diego metropolitan area aren't even familiar with this particular neighborhood. Kensington has a few local dining options, very little traffic congestion, high walkability, and is reasonably close to both the beaches and the San Diego beach neighborhoods.

Around Kensington

Kensington is made up almost entirely of detached single-family residences with both front and backyards. The neighborhood itself was developed decades ago - long before the Mid-City region of San Diego was established the way it is today. There is very little nightlife in Kensington; there are only a few very good restaurants and local shops along the Adams Avenue corridor, however there is little need to pay the premium associated with being located on or a couple of blocks from Adams Avenue.

Kensington is almost entirely a residential neighborhood, so there is not much in terms of restaurants. For that, you'll walk to head south to North Park, or head west to enjoy one of the many bars and restaurants located on Adams between Kensington and Hillcrest. That being said, there are a few restaurants that are popular amongst the locals. More specifically, Ponce's, a casual Mexican restaurant, and Bleu Bohéme, an upscale French bistro.

Kensington, along with the rest of the Mid-City neighborhoods, is incredibly walkable. That means you can expect to see many people walking and riding their bikes. While there is a lot of traffic on Adams, if you turn off that main avenue onto any of the residential streets you'll see very little traffic - but good luck finding a parking spot.

In general, Kensington is not the place to go if you're looking for a wild night out on the town. However, the local eateries will almost always be filled with patrons looking for a nice quiet meal. While the neighborhood does skew younger - much like San Diego itself - Kensington is actually one of the neighborhoods in San Diego where older families and couples live, due in no small part to the high property values.

The neighborhood of Kensington is ideally located along the Adams avenue corridor, where you can find small restaurants, eclectic antique shops, parts of Adams Avenue are known as "Antique Row." and plenty of places for a brunch (with or without endless mimosas). If you feel like walking a little further, North Park is located barely a mile away, and is packed with even more brunching options.
