River North

Chicago, Illinois

Overview

The Loop's more glamorous, more popular older sister, River North has a reputation as the center of the city's hottest clubs and restaurants. But to end the conversation there would do the neighborhood an injustice--River North is also home to some of the city's most iconic institutions, including the Magnificent Mile, and multiple galleries and boutique shops.

High-rise condominium buildings and a handful of townhomes make up the residences here and generally fetch a higher price than their counterparts in the Loop, but are comparable to what you'll find in Streeterville and Gold Coast. While surrounded by more historic--and some would argue, more traditional--neighborhoods, River North is generally more accepting of new concepts in food, nightlife, and shopping. River North tends to be just as bustling as the Loop during the day, due to the neighborhood's tourist attractions and offices, but, when the lights turn off in the Loop, the bars and restaurants in River North come alive.

Where To Live

On the west side of River North, residents often call luxury condos and high-rises home. Farther east near Lake Michigan, townhomes can also be found. Many years ago River North was a warehouse district, so those looking for a more unconventional home can opt for a repurposed loft space.

Price Vibes

The sheer number of condo units in River North make it slightly more accessible and competitively priced than its neighbors, but don't expect a great value here, as the price per square foot is even higher than in the illustrious Gold Coast and Streeterville. Still, the neighborhood is worthwhile for residents who want to walk to work, dinner, and any kind of cocktail you can shake a tiki torch at.
