Kenwood

Chicago, Illinois

Overview

Kenwood sits away from Downtown Chicago, and that's just how the neighborhood's original residents liked it. In fact, they left the metropolitan area because they tired of its congestion and noise and lack of space. They made up for it in Kenwood, where they build some of the city's most monumental, ornate homes, many of which still stand today. These less-than-humble abodes have had their fair share of famous residents, too; everyone from Muhammad Ali to Muddy Waters to Barack Obama have called Kenwood "home." Now, it's your turn.

Homes in Kenwood

Where To Live

Kenwood's most famous real estate are its estates, built mostly in the later half of the 1850s. You'll mostly find these homes standing in the neighborhood's southeast side, where the Hyde Park-Kenwood Historic District protects the integrity of these behemoth structures. Otherwise, you'll find more attainable single-family homes here, as well as Art Deco-style high-rise buildings that maintain the neighborhood's luxurious charm.

Around Kenwood

Where To Eat

Many of Kenwood's restaurants dot East 47th Street, but you'll also find pockets of eateries along Lake Shore Drive as well. Though not as diverse and ever-changing as, say, the culinary scene downtown, Kenwood has enough variety -- brunch, Brazilian, Asian fusion, sandwiches, Italian -- to keep its residents from getting bored.

Friday Night Fun

Kenwood has quite the classy reputation, so it might surprise you to find out that its residents frequent a handful of well-loved dive bars and pubs. Many of these bars happen to lie just on the edge of Kenwood and Hyde Park, so neighborhood lines might have to be crossed to find them. You'll also find live music at some of the local bars, as well as regular events thrown at the Hyde Park Art Center.

The Perfect Sunday

Grab a map (or make a memo of addresses on your smartphone) and head out to see some of the famous buildings and residences that Kenwood has to offer. Muhammad Ali's house, Muddy Waters' house, and the former head of Sears' house, among others, might dot your trail. You could start the day with brunch or end with a cup of coffee along Lakeshore Drive, taking in views of the lake as the sun sets on another week on Chicago's south side.
