Overview
Originally settled by Swedish immigrants, today Andersonville is known for its local businesses, lush residential blocks, and a tight-knit community--but you'll still find Swedish kitsch, and plenty of glogg, sprinkled throughout. The neighborhood offers quiet, family-friendly life mixed with a commercial corridor that's a microcosm of the best Chicago has to offer: top restaurants and bars, alternative theater, gay bars, and charming shops.
The North Side neighborhood is technically considered part of the lakefront community of Edgewater, but Andersonville has a distinct vibe. Family life frequently mixes with the neighborhood's bustling Clark Street corridor; you're likely to see a school fundraiser happening at Hopleaf, the neighborhood-favorite gastropub. You might see a few lines outside neighborhood brunch spots on Sundays, or small line to get in Hopleaf, but there's not as much commotion on the commercial strip as there is in say, Wicker Park. Easy access to the beaches along Lake Michigan and a signature neighborhood festival, Midsommarfest, make Andersonville one of Chicago's best neighborhoods to enjoy the summer. But when the winter rolls around and going outside is less appealing, you don't have to leave the neighborhood to get what you need: Clark Street has just about every kind of store, including a supermarket and smaller specialty food stores.
