Beverly

Chicago, Illinois

Overview

Beverly is one of the city's unique neighborhoods that's known for its historic architecture and for being the home of the popular South Side Irish Parade. At first glance, Beverly gives off a suburban-type vibe thanks to its quiet, tree-lined residential streets, large single-family homes, and vast greenspaces. But this hidden gem on Chicago's Far South Side has so much to offer within its borders.

Beverly has three locally designated landmark districts, one of which is on the National Register of Historic Places, and boasts iconic homes designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, Edward Dart, Walter Burley Griffin, Howard Van Doren Shaw, and George Maher. With relatively little new construction happening in Beverly, the architecture-rich neighborhood is predominantly made up of modest bungalows, brick Tudors, and Victorian, Colonial, and Prairie-style homes that were built between the 1860s to the 1960s.

Besides its popular historic homes, Beverly is known for having the most Irish bars than in any other neighborhood in the city, which are located along Western Avenue. The famous South Side Irish Parade is a decades-long neighborhood tradition that brings a touch of Ireland to the neighborhood, attracting large crowds from all over the city every year to celebrate St. Patrick's Day.

Where To Live

Beverly consists of your typical single-family homes and low-rise condos, but there are also historic districts featuring single-family homes built during the Victorian era and World War II. Architectural styles like bungalows and Prairie-style houses can be seen throughout the neighborhood. Beverly's Ridge Historic District runs from 87th Street to 115th Street and west to Western Avenue. Famous architects like Frank Lloyd Wright, Walter Burley Griffin, George W. Maher, and Howard Van Doren Shaw designed some of the houses in Beverly that give the neighborhood its distinct character.

Price Vibes

Although new-construction options are limited and many residents are long-term homeowners, Beverly does offer a limited selection of reasonably priced single-family homes, depending on the style and size. If you have your heart set on one of the famed historic homes designed by one of America's greatest architects, you'll pay a hefty price for it. Whether you choose to buy a 1920s fixer-upper bungalow or a renovated 1930s five-bedroom Tudor-style home, you won't have to sacrifice a lot of square footage like other neighborhoods in Chicago. Although Beverly (and Ashburn, which is located directly north of Beverly) is pricier than its surrounding neighborhoods--like Brainerd, Washington Heights, and Morgan Park--it's considered a bargain when compared to the rest of the city, and you're virtually guaranteed to have a single-family home with a front and backyard.

Around Beverly

Where To Eat

Beverly is known for its Irish pubs down Western Avenue. Grab a corned beef sandwich and a Guinness for a hearty meal. Beverly also has traditional eating establishments that have been around since the early- to mid-1900s and continue to be staples in the community today. Visit Top Notch on 95th Street and ask for a made-to-order round steak burger and a hand-dipped milkshake. If you're looking for dessert, check out the Original Rainbow Cone on Western Avenue, which has been a classic neighborhood ice cream shop since 1926. Relish in their namesake Rainbow Cone that is topped with five different ice cream flavors.

Friday Night Fun

Head to Western Avenue to have a drink at one of the many Irish bars. You can enjoy a casual atmosphere, good food, live music, and a fun crowd. During the summer months, delight in the festivities of carnivals, street festivals, and block parties that pop up in the neighborhood.

The Perfect Sunday

Check out the events at the Beverly Arts Center. This cultural and educational institution offers a variety of classes, activities, and events in the performing and visual arts fields. Art lovers can also visit The Heritage Gallery, which has been in the community for more than 50 years. It showcases paintings of Chicago-area landmarks and scenery by artist Jack Simmerling. For outdoor recreation, head to the Dan Ryan Forest Preserve which features miles of nature trails as well as paved bike paths and picnic areas. Also, if you're around during the month of March, catch a glimpse of the famous South Side Irish Parade that travels along Western Avenue, beginning at 103rd Street and ending at 115th Street.

Transportation Options

Although this neighborhood is tucked away from the hustle and bustle of Downtown Chicago, getting to the city is a breeze with numerous transportation options. The Metra has five stations throughout Beverly that transports daily commuters to the Loop. The CTA also has bus routes that connect to other parts of the city, with east/west routes along 103rd Street, 95th Street, and 87th Street. If you prefer to drive your own car, getting to downtown via Interstate 94 takes less than 30 minutes.
