Calumet Heights

Chicago, Illinois

Overview

Calumet Heights is a largely residential neighborhood located on the Far South Side of Chicago. This is one area of the city where the vast majority of the homes are owner-occupied, meaning those who move there tend to stay. The Metra and CTA buses serve the neighborhood. Per its name, the Calumet River is nearby, and even Lake Michigan is fairly close. The Pill Hill neighborhood is often considered part of Calumet Heights.

Where To Live

The main streets in the neighborhood are Stony Island Avenue, 87th Street, and 95th Street. You have to take the bus to connect to the Red Line, but you can also get into the city or suburbs via the Metra. Two-story, single-family homes are prominent, but newer developments and remodeling allow for a nice selection of smaller condos.

There is even a nice mix of fusion and ethnic food from the melting pot of residents who live in Chicago. Most restaurants offer low- to mid-range food that is high quality yet affordable. There are, of course, several fast food options in the neighborhood as well.

Friday Night Fun

The nightlife scene has improved over the years. A few bars have popped up along South Stony Island Avenue and East 87th Street. There are lots of great date night options and casual activities you can enjoy with friends and family. Don't forget to check out what is going on at the Jessie Owens Park, which was one of the Chicago parks that received a multimillion-dollar makeover when Chicago was bidding on the 2016 Olympics, even though the bid was not successful.

The Perfect Sunday

The outdoor areas of Jessie Owens Park are open on Sundays, and the less populated areas of Lake Michigan are only a short bus or car ride away. This is a dog-friendly neighborhood so head out for a stroll with your pet. Calumet Heights also has the Bronzeville Children's Museum.
