West Lawn

Chicago, Illinois

Overview

Located on the southwest side of Chicago, West Lawn has long been known as a melting pot of cultures. Settled in the early 1900s, the area experienced a boom during World War II and has seen more development since, inviting new residents from many different walks of life into the fold. Today, the neighborhood is an easygoing locale where friendly residents enjoy the peace and quiet found near the city limits.

Where To Live

Homeowners on the northern end of West Lawn must get used to some noise from Midway Airport, but they also enjoy easier access to the Orange Line train that travels to the Loop. With several small parks in the neighborhood, most homes will offer a nearby green space to relax or exercise. Parking is generally easy to find and prices for single-family homes and condominiums are fairly low for Chicago.

Around West Lawn

Where To Eat

West Lawn offers a variety of comfort cuisine to satisfy any appetite at a reasonable price. Taco joints abound throughout the neighborhood, great for lunch, dinner, or a late-night snack. Explore the main thoroughfares to find classic diners, BBQ joints, pizza parlors, and ice cream shops.

Friday Night Fun

Chow down at one of West Lawn's many taco and burrito spots, then drive over to the Ford City Shopping Center, a mall built inside of a former auto factory. When you’re finished shopping, head over to one of West Lawn’s humble taverns and throw a few songs on the jukebox to soundtrack a game of pool or darts.

The Perfect Sunday

Take a walk through West Lawn Park or drive over to Marquette Park for a round of golf. If you’re more in the mood for a history lesson, spend the day exploring the exhibits at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture. This museum is the largest repository of Lithuanian cultural artifacts outside of Lithuania and tells the story of Lithuanian Americans, many of whom reside in West Lawn.
