Burnside

Chicago, Illinois

Overview

The University of Chicago's cartographers made Burnside one of the city's 77 official neighborhoods when they released their map of each one and its borders. Before that, Burnside was just lumped into the neighborhoods that now surround it. Perhaps that's due in part to the fact that Burnside is the city's smallest official neighborhood. It has humble roots as a swampland and a bright past as an industrial headquarters. Though today, Burnside continues to rebuild itself after the end of the industrial era brought its economy to a halt.

Homes in Burnside

Where To Live

Houses for sale in the Burnside neighborhood flaunt price tags with varying numbers of zeroes. That variety gives you flexibility to choose a single-family home, condo or apartment to purchase. As for location, most hover at or near Cicero Avenue, the neighborhood’s main thoroughfare.

Around Burnside

Where To Eat

The grid-style streets that make Chicago famous stretch all the way south to Burnside. They give the neighborhood its own grid, which makes finding a restaurant easy if you stick to the main streets. East 87th Street, for example, is one of the more well-traveled roads and therefore has more restaurants. Keep an eye out for American, Caribbean, sandwich, soul food and pizza eateries.

Friday Night Fun

Burnside might not have as much nightlife as downtown Chicago, but a bit of exploring will reveal hole-in-the-wall bars and lounges where you can pop in for a relaxing beverage. Exploring just beyond the borders of Burnside might lead you to non-bar-based activities too. Neighboring areas have theaters, hobby classes and other leisure options if you want to have fun without imbibing.

The Perfect Sunday

The Chicago Park District has had the rights to Burnside Park since 1970, but only in 1998 was this green expanse given the same name as the neighborhood in which it lies. Burnside families flock to the park on days when it's not too rainy or cold to play on the fully stocked playground, as well as the baseball field and basketball courts. Head here on a sunny Sunday to see what all of the fuss is about.
