Clearing

Chicago, Illinois

Overview

Little known fact: there's a neighborhood divide that runs almost straight through Midway International Airport. The southern half is in Clearing, one of the city's 77 official communities. It gets its name from its long-standing ties with the city's transportation services -- railroad lines also ran through it -- as planes and trains "cleared" the area's farm goods. Of course, it's no longer farmlands down here and it hasn't been for a while; instead, lots of commuters and families call this neighborhood "home."

Where To Live

The neighborhood's main thoroughfare is 63rd Street; here, you'll find a sprinkling of spacious rentals for one or more residents. Another place to check out is the area surrounding Lawler Park known as Chrysler Village. Its single-family homes, townhouses, and duplexes once housed the factory workers who worked at the Chrysler Defense Plant during World War II. Clearly sturdy, these historic structures still stand -- and house the city's workers -- today.

Where To Eat

There are two places to look if you're hungry and in Clearing. The first would be 63rd Street, which cuts horizontally through the neighborhood. You might also have some luck on Cicero Avenue on the neighborhood's east side. As for the type of fare you'll find, there's plenty of variety: Mexican, deli sandwiches, brunch, burgers, and, of course, hot dogs and pizza. It's still Chicago, after all.

Friday Night Fun

Just as eclectic as its restaurants are Clearing's bars. One night, you might grab a glass of vodka and a pierogi tapa at an authentic Polish bar. Another evening could bring you to an Irish pub, where bartenders pride themselves on pouring a picture-perfect pint of Guinness. If you want something a little bit ritzier, grab an Orange Line train or taxi to the center.

The Perfect Sunday

It wouldn't be a city Sunday without brunch, and even this family neighborhood has plenty of breakfast selections. A fluffy omelet or stack of pancakes will fuel you up for an afternoon chasing the kids at Lawler Park as they dig through sandboxes or play a game of baseball. Hale Park, on the other hand, might suit adults a bit more, thanks to its pool and ball fields.
