Morgan Park

Chicago, Illinois

Overview

Morgan Park shed the reputation that it once held in the 1840s as a haven for horse thieves. It's true -- the neighborhood once had a steep ravine enshrouded in tall grass where horse thieves could easily hide themselves. Of course, there's much more to Morgan Park's history. The neighborhood's original residents flocked here to escape the hubbub of downtown. Many of Morgan Park's current residents do the same, though they do so without fear of having their horses taken away.

Where To Live

Morgan Park's original homeowners moved to the area hoping to spread out and enjoy a less crowded way of life than what was found downtown. They built large, single-family homes, many of which still stand today in their original forms. Victorian-style estates with wraparound porches can be found in Morgan Park as well as cozier bungalows and cottages. Buyers hoping to live near public transportation should look near the Metra rail, which runs through the center of the neighborhood.

Where To Eat

Western Avenue, a major thoroughfare, runs right through Morgan Park's western side and is home to many restaurants. You can eat well here and easily access the eateries that nearby neighborhoods have to offer. Deep-dish pizza, hearty sandwiches, BBQ, and burgers are the staples of this area.

Friday Night Fun

People flock to Morgan Park to check out what's happening at the Beverly Arts Center, a revered neighborhood institution. A 400-seat theater hosts intimate concerts and plays as well as classes in the arts. If nothing's happening there, residents can pay a visit to any of the bars and lounges lining Western Avenue.

The Perfect Sunday

In March, Morgan Park hosts one of the city's most famous events — the South Side Irish St. Patrick's Day Parade. On any other weekend, you might boutique-hop on Western Avenue, sample brews from a local brewery, or stroll through Prospect Gardens Park.
