West Elsdon

Chicago, Illinois

Overview

A sister community to West Lawn, West Elsdon shares a similar history and a proximity to Midway Airport. Built on marshy swamp land in the early 20th Century, the area saw a boom after World War II that has since dissipated, which suits West Elsdon just fine. The area couldn't handle much more activity or expansion; as one of Chicago's smallest community areas, West Elsdon is only one square mile in size, but it is brimming with history, eclectic architecture, and a rich culinary scene.

Where To Live

The CTA Orange Line runs runs along the northern border of the neighborhood, giving visitors a first peek or final glance of Chicago when flying in and out of the airport. The proximity to Midway makes West Elsdon very popular with pilots and flight attendants looking for an inexpensive spot close to work. But more than that, West Elsdon homes are truly unique, offering a mix of post-war bungalows, ranch-style homes, Cape Cods, and even corner store-turned-residential buildings.
